Since 2017 Minding the Badge™ has been developing and teaching mental health curriculum for public safety professionals. We are one of the leading resources for resiliency training and suicide intervention.
Known for our preemptive focus on mental health training, Minding the Badge™ teaches science based measures of self-assessment and self-regulation that have been proven to reduce the impact of future mental health issues, if not avoid them altogether.
Public safety as a culture has long been plagued by an approach to mental health issues that is focused more on damage control than damage prevention. Most of the resources and training aimed at improving mental health in public safety has revolved around crisis response, instead of what can be done to reduce the crisis in the first place. There has been far too much mental first aid training and not enough mental resiliency training.
With so much initial training on how first responders can avoid physical injury or death, why aren't we giving them preparatory training on how to avoid mental injury or suicide. We must move past a crisis focused approach that assumes crisis is inevitable; likewise, we must rely less on first aid and recovery in the aftermath, and rely more on navigating the risks with awareness and adaptability.
If research shows that most first responders are reluctant to turn to mental health professionals, wouldn't a logical response be to reduce their need for one in the first place? We reduce the need for crisis response by reducing the occurrence of crisis, and we do that by implementing an education of resiliency and teaching professionals the discipline of self-awareness and self-regulation.
Our passion is offering such training in order to contribute to a paradigm shift in the culture of public safety that is solution-oriented, rather than crisis-oriented. We encourage you to tour our website and discover for yourself how we can help you.
"DON'T WAIT FOR A CRISIS BEFORE YOU TRAIN FOR ONE!"
